|New immigration rules in the United States have been officially announced:
it is more difficult to get a green card when you receive benefits.
On Wednesday (10 local time), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published in the Federal Affairs a new regulation on Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds, which states that legal immigrants or their family members in the United States have used public welfare, such as food stamps or Chapter VIII housing allowances, according to comprehensive reports such as the Washington PoSt.Vouchers may be refused green cards in order to reduce the burden on the state.
This could force millions of poor migrants who depend on public assistance for food and shelter to make difficult choices between receiving financial aid and seeking green cards.
Many older immigrants who receive low-cost prescription drugs through the Medicare D part of the program may also be forced to stop participating in this popular welfare program, otherwise they will be considered as "public burdens" that are not eligible for legal residential status.
The new rules published on the homeland security website stipulate that the use of public welfare is a "serious trade-off negative factor" for those applying for permanent legal residence status.
Those who are considered dependent on government aid may be rejecteD.Under the new rules, immigrants can be asked to pay at least $10,000 in cash bail in limited circumstances to avoid being refused green cards because of the new rules.
According to the Federal Gazette, the statute has about 434 pages, down 13 pages from the draft published on the homeland security website on September 22. Since then, the public has 60 days to make public comments on the proposal.
It is reported that the new regulations only apply to those who apply for visas or permanent residence status.
Most people who have obtained green cards and applied for naturalization are unaffected.
