The terrain is wide and flat. It inclines gradually from southwest to northeast with an average elevation of 1100 meters. It is high in southwest and low in northeast. Yinchuan City is located in the middle of Ningxia plain irrigation area with abundant water resources. The Yellow River has a transit length of 78.4 kilometers, water surface of 124,700 mu, annual runoff of 3.15 million cubic meters, and annual water diversion from the Yellow River through Tanglai, Hanyan, West Main and Huinong canals in Yinchuan City amounts to 1.82 billion cubic meters. The groundwater resources in Yinchuan Plain are large in reserves and shallow in burial, with a groundwater volume of 756 million cubic meters and a recoverable volume of 453 million cubic meters.
Yinchuan is a continental climate in the middle temperate zone, with an average annual temperature of 8.5 C, a daily temperature difference of 12-15 C, and an average annual sunshine time of 2800-3000 hours. It is one of the areas with the largest solar radiation and sunshine hours in China. The annual average precipitation is 203 mm and the frost-free period is about 157 days. The main climatic characteristics are: long winter, warm spring, short summer, cool autumn and early autumn, drought and less rain, abundant sunshine, strong evaporation, large temperature difference between day and night, etc.
Yinchuan City is one of 62 famous historical and cultural cities announced by the State Council because of its unique natural landscape and abundant tourism resources. Here is the mausoleum of the Xixia Dynasty known as the "Chinese Pyramid". The main scenic spots and historic sites are Haibao Pagoda, Chengtian Temple Pagoda built in 1050, Bell and Drum Tower, Yuhuang Pavilion and South Gate Tower built in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Nanguan mosque with Islamic architectural style. In the outskirts, there are also the charming Helan Mountain Suyukou Primitive Forest Reserve, the Shahu Tourist Area and the attractive Zhenbeibao Film City.

The Shuidonggou site in the Paleolithic Age and the Neolithic cultural sites in Zhenbeibao and Warm Spring were the earliest settlements found in Yinchuan area 30,000 years ago.
During the reign of Emperor Yangshuo of the Han Dynasty (around 24 B.C.), Beidian Agricultural City was built, which was the beginning of Yinchuan's construction, and later renamed Xingqing Mansion as its capital.
Yuanzhi Zhongxing Road was replaced by Ningxia Fulu Road.
The Ming Dynasty was founded in Ningxia, and the Qing Dynasty was still governed by the Ming Dynasty.
During the period of the Republic of China (1929), Ningxia Province was founded. The city of Ningxia Province was named Yinchuan in April 1944.
At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was still the capital of Ningxia.
In 1954, Ningxia's organizational structure was abolished, and Yinchuan City was the seat of the Yinchuan Special Administration of Gansu Province.
In October 1958, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established. Yinchuan is the capital of the Autonomous Region and the political, economic and cultural center of the Autonomous Region.
